Swans Visit

On Thursday June 1st we are fortunate enough to have a couple of Swans players coming along to visit the Forest Lions. This is always a fun night, with the Swans players assisting with training drills and then an opportunity for the kids to ask questions, grab some photos and get an autograph or two.

The afternoon will kick off around 5pm and will finish off with a BBQ and a drink for the kids.

Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun.

Do you have any old pre-loved Footy Boots?

Do you have any pre-loved footy boots that the kids have grown out of but are still in good condition?

If so please bring them down next time your team plays at home and drop them into the box in the storeroom marked “FOOTY BOOTS”.

With the help of one of our fantastic sponsors, John Bull Removals, we will make sure they find a good home in the Laramba Community NT, and be given to kids who are in desperate need of some new boots. Any questions call Anna on 0400 270 368.

Monday Funday

Have you heard of or tried AFL9’s?

The Forest Lions have again got allocation to the synthetic fields at Melwood Avenue on Monday nights from 7.00pm to 8.00pm.

So we are conducting an AFL 9’s style of game for our U13’s, U14’s and U17’s age
groups – please note parents can also have a go.

AFL 9’s is a fast flowing game with the object of the game to keep the ball off the ground, as soon as the ball hits the ground it is an automatic turnover to the other side.

The game is non-contact.

The club sees this as an opportunity to have some fun, to get our older age groups together, improve skills and allow for any bumps and bruises from the Sunday to be ran out in a club friendly game.

If interested, it is 7.00pm for warm up and 7.15 start with two 20 minute halves

Injury Prevention Talk

On Sunday May 14th, Glenn Stevens, head Chiropractor at Move, Train, Perform Brookvale and Sports trainer with the GWS Giants AFL team will be showing the U17 team how to warm up correctly to help prevent injury.

He will then be running a short Injury Prevention Session in the clubs rooms from 2:45pm-3:15pm before the U17 games starts

Glenn has always been a great lover of sport; playing a wide variety of sports from soccer, cricket, tennis, athletics and Australian Rules football. His passion for Australian Rules saw him travel around the country representing NSW from 15-18 years of age and he also held a scholarship at Sydney University playing in their first grade team.

He is passionate about soft tissue work, manual adjusting, rehabilitation protocols, and educating the local community via his Mobility Workshops.

The Story of the Travelling Boots

What an AMAZING Journey!

Thanks to the generosity of so many people we were able to deliver two large boxes of footy gear to the kids at Laramba.

Towards the end of the season we sent out a request for contributions of any unwanted footy gear so we could make a donation to Laramba School which is located in an Aboriginal community  approximately 150kms north west of Alice Springs.

Once packed and decorated, the boxes began their amazing journey ...

It all started in Frenchs Forest when Donna Dixon delivered the boxes to Martin Fowle of John Bull Removals.

Martin then delivered the boxes to John Bull Removals premises in Mona Vale.

John Bull then delivered the boxes to Baulkham Hills Removals (Baulkham Hills).

Baulkham Hills delivered to Lancashire Removals in Melbourne (Campbellfield).

Delco Removals then collected from Lancashire and delivered to Adelaide (Lonsdale). Marion Pledger from Delco, in her spare timejust happens to work forPledgeTrek,  an aboriginal charitable family organisation. Marion took the boxes to the other side of Adelaide and delivered them to Aussiemove in Mawson Lakes.

Central Australian Removals in Alice Springs then took delivery of the boxes and contacted Lucy at Laramba School to let her know the boxes have arrived.

The Forest Lions would sincerely like to thank everyone involved in the journey, special thanks to all the shipping and delivery companies listed above who generously donated their services free of charge.

Lastly a massive thank you goes to Martin Fowle of John Bull Removals - without his connections the boxes would never have made it to the kids of Laramba School.

The weekend before....What an exciting weekend of Semi-Finals Footy !!

Congratulations to the u17s who are on FIRE. A convincing win against Canada Bay/North Ryde sees them move straight into the Grand Final.

Our u15s battled it out against Willoughby/Mosman in an absolute nail-biter...A one point win sees them straight into the Grand Final as well.

Unfortunately our u13s weren't as lucky and struggled to match it with a strong Canada Bay. The Forest boys fought right to the end, won the last quarter and with a couple of late goals lifted our spirits. Sadly their season has now come to an end, but everyone at Forest would like to congratulate them on a great season and for making it through to the Semi-Finals.

Swans Academy 2016 Results

The results from the Swans Academy 2016 Open Athlete Assessment Trials have now been finalised. The trials assessed three priority skill activities, four fundamental activities and two objective motor skill tests. The priority skill activities - kicking technique, marking and kick game - received a higher weighting than the other stations and video footage was captured to assist with player evaluations.

Congratulations to Matthew Lanewho has been accepted into theSwans Academy u11 program for 2017. There were 197 players who trialed and Matthew was one of only 34 to be selected to join the u11 squad. A great achievement Matthew.

We would also like to congratulate three of our up and coming stars from the u15s team. Michael Calley,Ben Davis and Alex Willett who have all been invited to join the Swans Academy at the u15 level.  This is an amazing accomplishment and we look forward to seeing these three boys progress through the program.

U18 Girls Northern Phoenix

Congratulations to our u18 Girls JV team, the Northern Phoenix, who won their Semi Final and now move into the Preliminary Final next Sunday against East Sydney.

Update from the Northern Phoenix ...
We are so very proud of how our Northern Phoenix girls played in the Preliminary Final against East Sydney at Trumper Park on the weekend. The girls did their parents, coach, manager and especially themselves proud with an amazing effort for four quarters against an older and more physical team. The first big bump in the first minute of the game gave an early insight into how the game was to be played. Despite this physicality, the girls more than held their own and the result could well have gone the other way. The final score of Easts 6.5 (41) to our 3.6 (24) didn't quite reflect the closeness of the game given the margin was within a goal or two for most of the match.

FATHER & CHILD WEEKEND OCTOBER 14-16, 2016

Following on from the success of the last years 'Inaugural Father and child(ren) weekend away' we feel compelled (and pushed by our wives) to go again. This year we are heading back to Norah Head Holiday Park and currently have 11 cabins (for 22 families) booked within the holiday park.

The Holiday park is close the Beach, a rock pool, cafés and has its own large jumping pillow, pool and plenty of room for the kids to play. It is conveniently located next to the Norah Head sports club where on Saturday afternoon we will do bare foot bowls followed by a bistro dinner.

Last years trip was a lot of fun and so this year we are opening it to bigger numbers within the club, please note it will be first in best dressed. Estimated cost at the moment is $230 for father and child (small amount of about $30 for extra child), this includes two nights accommodation, dinner on Friday night as well as some food and supplies for kids over the weekend.

Please RSVP with numbers attending to president@forestafl.com.au

Anyone wishing to set up a tent or van are more than welcome to do so as there are plenty of sites near our cabins. These sites can be booked directly with Holiday Park.

U15's North Representative are Winners of the GSJAFL Carnival

Forest AFL was represented by 6 young men from the U15s side who displayed some great skill on the field with plenty of good ball work, making an important contribution to the team and their success.

Congratulations to Ben Davis, Matt Filatoff, Dougie Gourlay, Sean Nimmo, Alex Willett, & Michael Calley (photographed from left to right)

It was a beautiful warm afternoon at the Blacktown International Sports Park, a great day to have a game of footy and watch some enthusiastic football from aspiring players. Once the sun dropped beyond the horizon, it became somewhat chilly, but the boys put on a terrific show for the crowds to enjoy!

Under the expert guidance of Coach Mark Leavy and Assistant Coach Peter Drum, the North team played four games on the day and was triumphant in all 4 to be the only team to win all four of their games, thus becoming the winners for the carnival. A fantastic achievement with the last game against City played under lights (but sadly not with heaters!).

Looking forward to another great day next year, and to meet some of the fellow North team mates in opposition during the rest of the season.

2016 NSWCHS Great Region AFL Trials in Nelson Bay

On Friday May 29th two of our Forest Lions players were lucky enough to participate in the 2016 NSWCHS Great Region AFL Trials in Nelson Bay.

66 boys from Sydney North, the Hunter Region and Northern NSW played in a number of trial matches in a hope of being selected for the Northern NSW Team to play in the NSWCHSSA State Carnival in Albury later this year. In a squad of 22 players, Will Smit and Callum White were the only two u13 (Year 7) boys selected to represent Sydney North in  team predominately made up of u15 players.

Although the boys were unsuccessful in being selected for the Northern NSW Team it was an amazing experience for both Will and Callum to play with and against some of the best players in the region.

Well done Will Smit and Callum White! The Forest Lions are so proud of you.

Forest Lions Players Represent Sydney North in PSSA AFL State Cup (May 19-21)

Four Mighty Forest Lions U12 Div 2 players were fortunate enough to be selected to represent Sydney North in the PSSA AFL State Cup.

Congratulations to Roddy Dixon, Callum White, Ben MacKinlay and Willem Smit who headed off last week to Blacktown International Sports Park for the three day competition.

The Sydney North team were placed in the top pool and have played against Riverina, Mackillop and CIS.

Since 1978 Riverina have taken out the competition 29 times and Mackillop have won the other 8 – It was a TOUGH draw.

Even though they lost their first three games, Sydney North were always competitive and our Forest boys all played really well.

There were 13 teams in total and on the last day Sydney North played off against Sydney West for 5th place.

It was an amazing game but sadly Sydney North went down by only four points so ended up 6th overall.

MacKillop were the overall winners of the State Cup.

Special mention must go to Roddy Dixon who was awarded the 'Sportsmanship and Fair Play Award'.

It was a fabulous experience for our boys, one they will never forget - playing on a full field in a stadium against the best players in the state.

As well as Northshore Club of the Year 2014

This is a great achievement for the Forest Lions, particularly being a smaller club that competes with larger clubs with more numbers and resources available to them.

Congratulations to everyone at the Forest Lions Club for this outstanding result.

Forest players selected in the North team for the under 14 GSJ carnival.

Five Forest players have been selected for the U14s Sydney North AFL Representative team for 2014.  This is very positive for our club being a a 500% increase on last year. A great mix of clubs and a mix of players from across the divisions that have made the team. We are very proud of our boys for their commitment to the trials and this is a great reward for their efforts. It will be hard work but a great day of footy.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Graeme Bartlett on Friday 30th May 2014.

Graeme was a life member of the Forest Lions club and was involved in many aspects of administration and coaching both at Club Level and Association Level for Representative teams over many years. He coached numerous premiership teams (including an undefeated U17's team in 1988) and is fondly remembered by players from that era. Graeme was part of the club when it operated out of a small demountable building and the canteen was an old caravan. It is through the hard work of people like Graeme that allows us to have the club we do today.  Proudly the Bartlett name continues to be associated with our club with his grandson Jack playing in the mighty U9 Tippetts. All teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect at the games on 1st June 2014.

Lionel Watts got a visit from two great Sydney Swans players, Toby Nankervis and Heath Grundy. About 80 kids (and just as many adults) turned up for a fun night of footy drills and training activities.

The kids got the opportunity to interview the boys and as usual, there were plenty of laughs and plenty of interesting questions!

Check out our photo gallery to see the kids and stars in action
